Family Tree Art

I just finished a project of a family tree for my parents as an anniversary gift. I saw something similar online and thought it would be fun to see what I could do.

I bought a blank art canvas and decoupaged on some pretty scrapbook paper. Because I didn't trust myself to write five generations of names correctly without making a mistake, I typed up all the family names in a fancy font, rubbed some pencil on the reverse side, then traced over the letters to get a "carbon copy" on the canvas. Then I wrote over it with an archival quality black pen. The leaves (printed out, cut out, and glued) have the names of the countries or states where each person is from. There may have been a better or easier way to do this, but I think it turned out well.

I have always felt like I should learn more about my ancestors, but never could quite catch the excitement. But after doing this project, I've become much more interested and have started doing my own research. This tree goes back 5 generations with only a couple of missing names or countries, but now I'm really compelled to find out more about those missing people because they had real lives and stories just like we all do.
